Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr recently gave an interview to The Mercury News. In it, Kerr addressed the team’s chemistry issues last season.
Golden State built a new dynasty in the mid-to-late 2010s, winning three championships. Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green built a culture that was unique to the Warriors, and the addition of Kevin Durant made them a devastating team.
Golden State’s winning mentality shone through in the 2021-2022 season, when the Warriors won the title again and looked poised to dominate the 2020s.
However, the Warriors received a disappointing report card last season. The defending champions entered the playoffs as the sixth seed after a series of twists and turns. In the first round, they defeated third-seeded Sacramento in a thrilling seven-game upset.
But in the second round, they were brought to their knees by the seventh-seeded Los Angeles Lakers. Golden State’s playoff journey ended in the second round.
Kerr said, “I think we failed to build team chemistry last season. This summer, I spent some time thinking about things that I should have approached differently last year,” Kerr said.
One such example is the conflict between Green and Jordan Poole. Green sparked controversy when he threw a punch at Jordan Poole’s face during a training session. After this incident, the team’s chemistry began to crumble.
The Warriors traded Poole to try and salvage the situation, but Green has continued to bring it up and embarrass the team. Reports have emerged that Curry, the team’s core, is also troubled by Green’s recent behaviour.
However, Kerr said that next season will be different. Kerr has faith in his new players, including Chris Paul.
“We’re going to come back next season with a new energy and a new mindset,” Kerr said.
It doesn’t matter how good your players are, if they don’t work as a team, you won’t win. Basketball is a five-on-five sport. It remains to be seen if Kerr can rebuild Golden State’s culture.
