Kim started the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) game against the New York Mets at Petco Park in San Diego on Aug. 8 (KST) and went 1-for-3 with one run, one hit, one run scored, one stolen base and one strikeout before being removed from the game.

Kim drew a full-count walk in the first inning against Justin Verlander, one of MLB’s best pitchers, and stole second base (his 16th of the season). Manny Machado then came home on an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the second inning with a 3-1 lead and runners on first and second, Kim hit a curveball, but it went straight to the third baseman for the final out. Two batters later in the fourth, he was stranded on a Verlander slider.

The game was tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. I was reunited with Brooks Reilly, a left-hander I faced a lot in the KBO. Kim, who had struggled against Reilly in the KBO, hit his sinker for a two-run double that rolled over the third baseman and into the fence.

The problem was the next play. Knowing that left fielder Tommy Pham didn’t have a strong shoulder, Kim slid and tried to steal the base, but was called out.

Believing that there was interference from the third baseman, Kim looked at the dugout and the umpire after the call and said, “It’s unfair.

After returning to the dugout unable to overturn the call, Kim kicked a bucket of water, injuring his toe in the process, and was taken out of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. After Kim was out, Juan Soto hit a two-run double, making Kim’s baserunning play even more disappointing. The local media said, “Kim’s baserunning became a fatal blow.” Unable to break the 3-3 tie, San Diego lost 5-7 to the Mets in extra innings.

After the game, Kim explained the situation in an interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune. “I sprinted and passed second base, and I thought Pam (left fielder) was late, so I ran to third base, but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted,” he said. “I feel responsible and reflect on the fact that (my run) affected the outcome of the game.”
